Gerrard- "we must cope with the pressure"

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool need to learn to cope with the pressure of being at the top of the Premier League table.

Gerrard feels that the players must maintain the level of form which has put the team in such a strong position after 17 games. "We're up against some fantastic teams in Chelsea, Arsenal, United and Villa, and other teams are putting pressure on the top four,"

He added: "I think as captain it's important to dampen down expectations - there's no point getting carried away in December, there's still an awful long way to go.

Liverpool have confirmed Rafa Benitez is due to have surgery after suffering a kidney stones problem.

The news comes just 24 hours after Chelsea chief Luiz Felipe Scolari spent a night in hospital with a similar problem!!

Benitez was admitted to hospital in the early hours of Monday morning and he will have a minor operation later on Monday.

The Spaniard is expected to return to work later this week after the minor operation.

"Rafa was admitted to hospital last night after suffering problems with a kidney stone," said a club spokesman.

"He will undergo a minor operation this afternoon and is expected to return to work within two or three days.

"He remains in good spirits and everyone at Liverpool wishes him a very speedy recovery."

Torres for fifa award

Manchester United midfielder Ronaldo and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres have been shortlisted for the Fifa World Player of the Year award.

United and Portugal winger Ronaldo, 23, scored 42 goals for his club last season and collected the European Player of the Year award on Sunday.

Torres scored 33 goals in his debut season for Liverpool and the winner for Spain in the final of Euro 2008.
